Polymyxin B

Polymyxin B is an antibiotic medication used to treat severe bacterial infections that are resistant to other antibiotics. It is part of a group of antibiotics called polymyxins, which work by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, leading to the death of the bacteria. Polymyxin B is primarily used in cases where other antibiotics have failed or are ineffective against certain types of bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and certain Gram-negative organisms.
The medication is often administered as an ophthalmic solution, ear drops, or a topical cream, depending on the specific infection being treated. When applied to the eye, Polymyxin B is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, a painful eye infection that causes redness, itching, and discharge. When used as ear drops, it is effective against bacterial otitis externa, also known as swimmer’s ear, a condition that causes inflammation and infection in the outer ear canal. Additionally, Polymyxin B is available as a topical cream to treat skin infections caused by bacteria, such as impetigo or folliculitis.
