Isavuconazole
Isavuconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat serious fungal infections, particularly those caused by Aspergillus and other molds. It belongs to a class of drugs called azoles, which work by inhibiting the growth of fungi and killing the organisms responsible for the infection.
Isavuconazole is available as a combination medication, often prescribed as SOTF (sodium ostertiol, triazole, and fluconazole). This combination treatment is designed to provide a broader spectrum of antifungal activity, making it effective against a wide range of fungal infections.
The primary use of isavuconazole is for the treatment of invasive aspergillosis, a severe and potentially life-threatening infection caused by the Aspergillus fungus. This infection is particularly dangerous for individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with cancer, organ transplant recipients, or people with chronic lung diseases.
In addition to invasive aspergillosis, isavuconazole is also used to treat other types of fungal infections, such as sinusitis, bronchitis, and skin infections caused by molds. The use of isavuconazole should be reserved for cases where other antifungal medications have failed or are not suitable for the patient.
Isavuconazole is typically administered intravenously (into a vein) for the initial treatment phase, followed by oral administration for the completion of the course. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the infection and the patient’s response to the medication.
