Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine is a combination medication that protects against three highly contagious viral diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. It is primarily used for immunizing children and adults against these viruses to prevent outbreaks and reduce the complications associated with each disease. Measles is a highly infectious viral illness characterized by fever, rash, and respiratory symptoms. Mumps is an acute viral infection that can cause swelling of the salivary glands and potentially lead to complications such as meningitis or orchitis. Rubella, also known as German measles, is a mild viral infection that can cause a skin rash and, in pregnant women, can result in congenital rubella syndrome, which can lead to birth defects in the developing fetus. The MMR vaccine is administered as a single dose to children between 12 and 15 months of age, with a second dose given between the ages of 4 and 6 years. In certain circumstances, adults who have not previously been vaccinated or have not had the diseases may also be recommended to receive the MMR vaccine.
