Sildenafil
Sildenafil is a prescription medication, commonly known under the brand name Viagra, used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult males. ED is a condition where a man cannot achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. Sildenafil works by enhancing the blood flow to the penis, helping achieve and maintain an erection when engaged in sexual stimulation. It belongs to a class of drugs called PDE-5 inhibitors, which work by inhibiting the action of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5).
The mechanism of action involves the release of nitric oxide in the penile tissues during sexual arousal, which leads to the relaxation of smooth muscle and increased blood flow into the penis. Sildenafil blocks the action of PDE-5, which in turn prolongs the effects of nitric oxide and enables a more sustained erection.
Sildenafil is not effective without sexual stimulation, and its effects typically last for around four hours. Sildenafil is not intended for use in women or for children. It may be taken with or without food but should be taken with caution in patients taking nitrate-based medications due to the potential risk of severe hypotension (low blood pressure). Common side effects include headaches, flushing, and visual disturbances, which usually subside after a few hours.
Before using Sildenafil, consult a healthcare professional to discuss any potential interactions with other medications, pre-existing medical conditions, and any contraindications. Sildenafil can be a valuable treatment option for many individuals suffering from erectile dysfunction, helping to improve their sexual wellbeing and quality of life.
