Agomelatine
Agomelatine is a prescription medication primarily used for the treatment of depressive disorders. It is a selective serotonin 2 (5-HT2) receptor agonist and melatonin (MT1 and MT2) receptor agonist with weak serotonin (5-HT1A) receptor antagonist properties. Its action on the serotonin 2 and melatonin receptors helps regulate sleep-wake cycles and mood, while the effect on the serotonin 1A receptor helps reduce anxiety.
Agomelatine is a unique antidepressant as it does not possess the side effects typically associated with traditional medications, such as weight gain or sexual dysfunction. It is suitable for patients who have not responded to standard antidepressants or require a treatment with minimal impact on their daily activities. The recommended dose of agomelatine is 25mg to be taken once daily at bedtime to maximize its therapeutic effect while minimizing the risk of side effects. Regular monitoring of liver function is required during the initial phase of treatment. Agomelatine should be prescribed with caution in patients with severe liver impairment, history of mania, or seizures.
