Mifepristone, Misoprostol
Mifepristone and Misoprostol are two medications used in combination for early medical abortion and management of miscarriage. Mifepristone is a progesterone receptor antagonist that blocks the action of progesterone, a hormone necessary for maintaining pregnancy. Misoprostol, on the other hand, is a prostaglandin E1 analogue that stimulates uterine contractions and cervical softening.
The combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol is used for early medical abortion up to 70 days (10 weeks) of pregnancy. The process typically involves taking Mifepristone first, which blocks progesterone and initiates the abortion process. This is followed by Misoprostol, which induces uterine contractions to expel the pregnancy tissue. The procedure is safe, effective, and has fewer side effects compared to surgical abortion.
In addition to early medical abortion, Mifepristone and Misoprostol can also be used to manage incomplete miscarriages or miscarriages that require medical intervention. The medications help to complete the process by softening the cervix and stimulating uterine contractions to expel the remaining pregnancy tissue.
Both medications are taken under medical supervision and should only be used as directed by a healthcare professional. Patients should be closely monitored for any complications or side effects, such as heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or fever.
