Colchicine
Colchicine is a medication used for the management and prevention of gout flare-ups and family Mediterranean fever. It is an alkaloid extracted from the autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) plant.
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that occurs when excess uric acid in the body crystallizes and deposits in the joints, causing severe pain and swelling. Colchicine helps reduce the inflammation and alleviate the symptoms of gout.
Family Mediterranean fever, also known as hereditary periodic fever syndrome, is a rare autoinflammatory disease characterized by episodes of fever, abdominal pain, joint pain, and inflammation in other organs. Colchicine has been found to be effective in reducing the frequency and severity of these episodes in affected individuals.
