Probenecid

Probenecid is a medication commonly used to treat individuals with gout, a painful form of arthritis caused by an accumulation of uric acid in the joints. It works by inhibiting the excretion of uric acid through the kidneys, thereby reducing the levels of this substance in the body. This prevents the formation of painful urate crystals and can help prevent gout attacks and reduce their severity when they do occur. Probenecid is usually prescribed for both acute gout attacks and for long-term management of chronic gout in patients who are producing excess amounts of uric acid. It can also be used in combination with other medications during the treatment of certain infectious diseases that require high levels of antibiotic excretion, such as certain types of bacterial endocarditis. While taking this medication, maintain good hydration, consume a diet low in purines (which can form uric acid), and monitor renal function.
