Teriparatide
Teriparatide is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs called parathyroid hormone (PTH) analogues. It is a synthetic version of the natural parathyroid hormone produced by the body, which plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy bone density and strength. Teriparatide is primarily used to treat osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weak and fragile bones that are more susceptible to fractures.
Osteoporosis is particularly common in postmenopausal women and older adults, but it can also affect individuals with certain medical conditions or those who are taking specific medications that weaken the bones. Teriparatide is designed to stimulate bone formation and increase bone density, thereby reducing the risk of fractures and improving overall bone health.
Teriparatide is available in the form of a daily injection, typically administered subcutaneously (under the skin). The medication is usually prescribed for a limited duration, typically 18 to 24 months, after which alternative treatments may be considered. Follow the prescribed dosage and schedule closely, as well as to consult with a healthcare professional before starting treatment, to ensure the most effective and safe course of action.
