Abatacept

Abatacept is a biologic medication primarily used for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and pain in the joints. It is also prescribed for treating juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in children, as well as psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS), both of which are forms of arthritis that affect the spine.
Abatacept works by inhibiting the activation of T-cells, a type of white blood cell that plays a central role in the immune system. By modulating the immune response, abatacept helps to reduce inflammation and alleviate the symptoms associated with these arthritic conditions.
In clinical trials, abatacept has demonstrated efficacy in improving physical function, reducing joint damage, and providing long-term disease control in patients with RA, JIA, PsA, and AS. It is typically administered as an intravenous infusion every four weeks or as a subcutaneous injection every two weeks, depending on the individual patient’s needs and preferences.
As with all medications, abatacept carries potential side effects, which may include infection, increased risk of cancer, and hypersensitivity reactions. Healthcare providers carefully evaluate the risks and benefits of treatment before prescribing abatacept, and patients should discuss any concerns with their healthcare team.
