Naphazoline

Naphazoline, a potent vasoconstrictor, belongs to the sympathomimetic amines group of drugs. It is commonly prescribed in ophthalmic formulations such as eye drops. When applied to the eye, Naphazoline narrows the blood vessels and constricts the blood flow. This constriction helps relieve ocular symptoms caused by redness, itching, swelling, or discomfort, often seen in conditions like allergic conjunctivitis.
As a vasoconstrictor, Naphazoline works by reducing the influx of blood to the blood vessels within the eye. It constricts the arterioles, the small arteries that carry blood to the eye’s tissues, and venules, the small veins that drain blood from the eye. As a result, the blood vessels shrink, thereby decreasing blood flow and fluid accumulation, which leads to redness and swelling of the eye.
Naphazoline is usually found in combination with other medications, such as anesthetics or antihistamines, to provide more comprehensive relief from eye conditions. It’s important to remember that while Naphazoline offers temporary relief, long-term or frequent use may result in tolerance or rebound effects.
