Zonisamide
Zonisamide is an antiepileptic medication primarily used for the treatment of various types of epilepsy. It is a sulfonamide derivative that works by stabilizing neuronal membranes, reducing the frequency of seizures, and preventing the spread of seizure activity in the brain.
Zonisamide is effective in controlling different seizure types, including focal (partial) seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and myoclonic seizures. It is often used as an adjunct therapy, meaning it is added to other antiepileptic drugs to improve seizure control when monotherapy has proven insufficient.
In addition to its antiepileptic properties, Zonisamide has been found to have some benefits in treating migraine prevention. It can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks by stabilizing neuronal membranes and modulating neurotransmitter systems.
Zonisamide is generally well-tolerated, but potential side effects may include dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea, and weight loss. Follow the prescribed dosage and consult with a healthcare professional before starting or stopping the medication.
