Entacapone
Entacapone is a medication used in combination with levodopa/carbidopa for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. It works by increasing the effectiveness of levodopa/carbidopa in the body, allowing for a longer duration of action and reducing the side effects associated with levodopa, such as dyskinesia and fluctuations in motor function. Entacapone does not provide any additional therapeutic effects on its own and must be used in conjunction with levodopa/carbidopa to be effective. It is typically prescribed to patients who experience “wearing off” or “on-off” episodes, where their Parkinson’s symptoms return between doses of levodopa/carbidopa. Entacapone is available in tablet form and should be taken three times a day, with each dose given alongside a dose of levodopa/carbidopa. Patients should follow their healthcare provider’s instructions carefully and report any adverse effects or changes in their condition promptly.
