Nitrofurantoin
Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic medication used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by susceptible bacteria. It is a nitrofuran derivative that works by inhibiting bacterial growth and preventing the formation of new bacterial proteins, thus eliminating the infection.
Nitrofurantoin is available in two forms: macrocrystal and microcrystal. The macrocrystal formulation is a slow-release capsule, which provides a controlled release of the active ingredient, allowing for fewer doses and a longer duration of action. The microcrystal formulation, on the other hand, is a rapid-release capsule, providing faster relief from the infection.
Nitrofurantoin is typically prescribed for uncomplicated lower UTIs, such as cystitis, in adults and children over the age of one month. It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions for the proper use and duration of the medication to ensure its effectiveness and minimize the risk of developing antibiotic resistance.
Although nitrofurantoin is generally well-tolerated, some side effects may occur, including gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. Rarely, it may cause more severe side effects like liver or blood disorders, so report any adverse reactions to the prescribing healthcare professional immediately.
