Norethisterone

Norethisterone, also known as Norethindrone or Norlutate, is a synthetic progestin, a type of hormone that belongs to the class of drugs called progestogens. It is an oral contraceptive commonly used to prevent pregnancy in women who are not pregnant or nursing.
Norethisterone works by inhibiting ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary, which reduces the chances of pregnancy. It also thickens the mucus in the cervix, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and alters the lining of the uterus, making it less likely for an implanted egg to develop and thrive.
In addition to its use as a contraceptive, Norethisterone is also used to treat various gynecological conditions such as irregular menstrual cycles, endometriosis, and menstrual migraines. It can also be used to induce menstruation in women who have missed a period, and to control excessive bleeding during menstruation.
Norethisterone is available in various forms, including tablets and injections. The oral contraceptive pill containing Norethisterone, known as Norlutate, is typically taken for 21 days followed by a 7-day break, during which a woman usually experiences withdrawal bleeding similar to a period.
Norethisterone may not be suitable for all women, especially those with certain medical conditions, such as a history of blood clots or breast cancer. Women who smoke or are over the age of 35 are also at a higher risk of developing blood clots while using Norethisterone, so consult with a healthcare professional before starting this medication.
