Proparacaine

Proparacaine is a topical anesthetic medication used to numb the eye surface during ophthalmic procedures. It belongs to the amide local anesthetics class and works by blocking nerve impulses, causing a temporary loss of sensation in the treated area.
Proparacaine hydrochloride 0.5% ophthalmic solution is specifically designed for use in the eye, and it is commonly employed for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that may cause discomfort or pain. The medication is quickly absorbed by the corneal epithelium and rapidly acts on the nerve endings to provide a rapid onset of action, usually within 30 to 60 seconds. Its effect typically lasts for about 15 to 20 minutes.
This medication is used in a wide range of ophthalmic applications, including but not limited to, ocular examinations, corneal refractometry, tonometry, foreign body removal, and superficial corneal surgeries. Due to its rapid onset of action and short duration, proparacaine is preferred by many healthcare professionals for its convenience and safety in these procedures.
Proparacaine should be applied sparingly and cautiously to avoid excessive dosage and systemic absorption, which may lead to side effects such as local irritation, temporary blurred vision, and allergic reactions. As with any medication, patients should consult with their healthcare provider before using proparacaine and report any adverse effects or symptoms promptly.
