Rasburicase

Rasburicase is a pharmaceutical substance known as a urate oxidase enzyme. It is a specialized medication primarily used to treat a condition called hyperuricemia. This condition occurs when there is an excessive buildup of uric acid in the blood, often resulting from the breakdown of purines, which are organic compounds found in certain foods and human cells. Hyperuricemia can lead to gout, kidney stones, and even kidney failure in severe cases.
Rasburicase specifically targets the high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream, converting it into allantoin, a substance that is easily excreted through the kidneys. This conversion process helps to alleviate the symptoms of hyperuricemia, as well as prevent further complications, such as gout and kidney issues.
The medication is particularly beneficial for patients undergoing cancer treatment, especially those receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy, as these treatments often induce hyperuricemia as a side effect. Additionally, rasburicase is commonly administered to children with a rare genetic disorder called Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, which causes elevated levels of uric acid and the formation of kidney stones.
