Salmeterol
Salmeterol is a long-acting bronchodilator medication, specifically belonging to the class of drugs called beta-agonists. It is used to help manage and alleviate the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. Salmeterol works by relaxing and widening the airways in the lungs, allowing for improved airflow and easier breathing.
Salmeterol is available in both inhaler and tablet forms, and is often prescribed as a combination medication with other medications, such as fluticasone, to provide a more comprehensive treatment approach for COPD. The use of salmeterol as a long-acting bronchodilator helps to provide sustained relief from symptoms throughout the day and night, while also reducing the frequency of COPD exacerbations.
Salmeterol is not a rescue medication and should not be used to relieve acute symptoms of COPD, such as sudden attacks of shortness of breath. Instead, it is intended for regular, daily use as part of a larger treatment plan for managing COPD.
