Mepolizumab

Mepolizumab is a monoclonal antibody medication used to treat severe asthma in adults and adolescents. It is specifically indicated for patients with a specific type of eosinophilic asthma, characterized by a high blood eosinophil count and frequent exacerbations. Mepolizumab works by targeting and neutralizing interleukin-5 (IL-5), a protein involved in the inflammatory process of asthma. By reducing the levels of IL-5, mepolizumab helps to decrease the number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in the blood and airways, ultimately leading to a reduction in asthma symptoms and the frequency of exacerbations. Mepolizumab is administered as a subcutaneous injection every four weeks.
