Treatment and prevention of asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Treatment and prevention of asthma aim to control symptoms, improve lung function, and maintain a good quality of life.
There are two primary approaches to managing asthma: long-term control medications and quick-relief medications. Long-term control medications include inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting bronchodilators, leukotriene receptor antagonists, and theophylline. These medications help reduce inflammation in the airways, prevent symptoms, and control asthma over the long term. Quick-relief medications, such as short-acting bronchodilators, are used to quickly relieve sudden asthma symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing.
Preventive measures for asthma include avoiding triggers, such as allergens, irritants, and infections, as well as maintaining regular medical check-ups and using medications as prescribed. In addition to medication, a comprehensive asthma management plan should include patient education, regular monitoring of symptoms and lung function, and appropriate adjustment of medication regimens.
