Ruxolitinib

Ruxolitinib is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. It is specifically an inhibitor of JAK1 and JAK2, which are enzymes involved in the regulation of cell growth and immune response. Ruxolitinib is used primarily for the treatment of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), a group of rare blood disorders characterized by overproduction of blood cells.
In patients with polycythemia vera, a type of MPN where there is an excessive production of red blood cells, ruxolitinib helps to reduce the symptoms associated with the condition, such as itching, fatigue, and enlarged spleen. By inhibiting JAK1 and JAK2, ruxolitinib suppresses the overactive signaling pathways that lead to the overproduction of blood cells, thereby reducing the risk of blood clots and other complications.
For patients with myelofibrosis, another MPN characterized by the scarring of the bone marrow, ruxolitinib helps to alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, night sweats, and abdominal discomfort. By targeting JAK1 and JAK2, the medication reduces the production of fibrotic proteins that cause the bone marrow scarring, leading to an improvement in overall quality of life.
In addition to its use in MPNs, ruxolitinib has been approved for the treatment of patients with graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a potentially life-threatening complication that occurs after a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. In this context, ruxolitinib works by modulating the immune response and reducing the inflammation associated with GVHD, thus improving the patient’s condition.
Ruxolitinib is typically administered orally, usually once or twice daily, and should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
