Dienogest
Dienogest is a progestin-only hormonal medication, commonly used in contraceptive formulations. It is a synthetic steroid that works primarily by inhibiting ovulation, thereby preventing pregnancy. Dienogest is available in various forms, including oral contraceptive pills and vaginal rings.
As a contraceptive, Dienogest is effective in preventing pregnancy when taken as directed. It is often prescribed to women who cannot use combination hormonal contraceptives due to medical conditions or personal preferences. Dienogest is also known to have anti-androgenic properties, which may be beneficial for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or hirsutism.
In addition to its contraceptive use, Dienogest can be prescribed for the treatment of endometriosis, a painful condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. By suppressing the growth of endometrial tissue, Dienogest can help alleviate pain and other symptoms associated with endometriosis.
Dienogest does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and consistent use of barrier methods, such as condoms, is recommended to reduce the risk of STIs. Patients should consult with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate contraceptive method based on their individual needs and medical history.
