Introduction

Excol is a topical medication that contains the active ingredients Polymyxin B and Chloramphenicol. It is available in ointment form and is commonly prescribed for the treatment of certain bacterial infections of the skin and eyes.

Uses

Excol is primarily used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Skin infections, including impetigo and infected wounds

Dosage and Administration

The dosage and administration of Excol may vary depending on the specific condition being treated. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional. Generally, the ointment should be applied to the affected area or eye as directed.

For eye infections:

Wash your hands before applying the ointment.

Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.

Squeeze a thin strip of ointment into the pocket created by the lower eyelid.

Close your eyes gently and roll them in all directions to distribute the ointment.

Wipe away any excess ointment from the eyelids or surrounding areas.

Repeat the process for the other eye if both eyes are affected.

For skin infections:

Clean the affected area thoroughly before applying the ointment.

Apply a thin layer of ointment to cover the entire affected area.

Gently rub the ointment into the skin until it is absorbed.

Wash your hands after applying the ointment.

Mechanism of Action

Excol contains two active ingredients: Polymyxin B and Chloramphenicol. Polymyxin B belongs to a group of antibiotics called polymyxins, which work by disrupting the cell membranes of bacteria, ultimately leading to their death. Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the growth and reproduction of bacteria by interfering with their protein synthesis.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Mild itching or burning sensation at the site of application
  • Temporary blurred vision (when used for eye infections)

Serious side effects are rare, but if you experience any of the following, seek medical attention immediately:

  • Severe allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, or swelling
  • Eye pain, redness, or worsening of symptoms (when used for eye infections)

Drug Interactions

inform your healthcare professional about any other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal products. Certain medications may interact with Excol and affect its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. Common drug interactions may include:

  • Other topical medications containing antibiotics
  • Eye drops or ointments containing corticosteroids

Precautions

Before using Excol, inform your healthcare professional if you have any allergies or medical conditions. Additionally, consider the following precautions:

  • Do not use Excol if you are allergic to Polymyxin B, Chloramphenicol, or any other ingredients in the ointment.
  • Avoid using the ointment for longer than prescribed or in larger amounts, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare professional before using this medication.

Storage

Excol should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the ointment if it has expired or if the packaging is damaged.

Patient Tips

  • Follow your healthcare professional’s instructions regarding the proper use of Excol.
  • Wash your hands before and after applying the ointment to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Avoid touching the tip of the ointment tube or applicator to any surface to prevent contamination.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the ointment and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • If your symptoms do not improve or worsen after a few days of treatment, contact your healthcare professional for further evaluation.
