Introduction

Mycin is a medication used to treat eye infections. It contains two active ingredients: Polymyxin B and Chloramphenicol.

Uses

Mycin is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial eye infections, including conjunctivitis (pink eye) and blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids). It works by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria in the eyes.

Dosage and Administration

To use Mycin, wash your hands thoroughly before applying the medication. Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above your eye and squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pocket. Close your eye gently and blink a few times to spread the medication. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye, to prevent contamination. Follow your healthcare professional’s instructions regarding the dosage and frequency of administration.

Mechanism of Action

Polymyxin B in Mycin works by damaging the bacterial cell membrane, leading to the leakage of essential components and ultimately causing the death of bacteria. Chloramphenicol inhibits the synthesis of proteins in bacteria, preventing their growth and reproduction.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Mycin may include temporary eye irritation, stinging, burning, or redness. These side effects are usually mild and should subside on their own. However, if you experience any severe or persistent side effects, such as eye pain, vision changes, or worsening of symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Drug Interactions

There are no known significant drug interactions with Mycin. However, it is always important to inform your healthcare professional about all the medications, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, that you are currently taking to avoid any potential interactions.

Precautions

Before using Mycin, inform your healthcare professional if you are allergic to Polymyxin B, Chloramphenicol, or any other ingredients in the medication. Also, let them know if you have any other medical conditions, such as glaucoma or any ongoing eye problems. Mycin should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Polymyxin B or Chloramphenicol. Follow your healthcare professional’s advice and instructions regarding the appropriate use of this medication.

Storage

Patient Tips

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying Mycin.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye, to prevent contamination.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the medication and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Do not share your medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
  • If your symptoms do not improve or worsen after a few days of treatment, contact your healthcare professional for further evaluation.
