Allergic eye disease

Allergic eye disease, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, is a common condition characterized by eye discomfort and irritation caused by an allergic reaction to environmental irritants, such as pollen, dust, and pet dander. The immune system mistakenly identifies these substances as harmful and releases chemicals, such as histamines, leading to inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin clear membrane that lines the inner surfaces of the eyelids and covers the white part of the eye. Symptoms typically include redness, itching, watering, and swelling.
There are various over-the-counter and prescription treatments available to help manage allergic eye disease. Common medications include antihistamine eye drops, which help alleviate symptoms by blocking the effects of histamine, and mast cell stabilizers that prevent the release of histamine and other chemicals from cells in the conjunctiva. Some medications, like corticosteroid eye drops, work by reducing inflammation in the eye. Eye drops containing antihistamines and decongestants may also be used to treat symptoms, but these medications should be used with caution, especially for long-term use, as they may cause side effects such as increased eye pressure.
Choose the appropriate treatment for your specific condition, as self-diagnosing and self-medicating can potentially lead to complications or worsening of symptoms. Consult with a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and recommendation for the most suitable treatment option.
