Alcaftadine
Alcaftadine, also known as ketotifen fumarate, is an antihistamine and anti-inflammatory medication. It belongs to a class of drugs called mast cell stabilizers, which help to relieve allergy symptoms by inhibiting the release of histamine and other chemicals from the cells involved in allergic reactions.
Alcaftadine eye drops are commonly used to treat various eye conditions related to allergies or inflammation, such as seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (allergy-induced pink eye), vernal conjunctivitis (a specific type of allergic eye condition), and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (an inflammatory eye disease associated with allergies).
When applied topically, alcaftadine helps to alleviate itching, redness, and swelling of the eye’s surface. The medication works by stabilizing mast cells, which are immune cells involved in the allergic response, thus preventing the release of histamine and other allergic mediators.
To use alcaftadine eye drops, gently shake the bottle before use and instill the prescribed amount into the affected eye(s), following the instructions provided by your healthcare professional. Alcaftadine should be used regularly for optimal effectiveness, and continue treatment even if the symptoms seem to improve.
Before using alcaftadine eye drops, inform your healthcare provider of any known allergies, eye infections, or other medical conditions to ensure its safe and appropriate use. Additionally, consult with your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to undergo eye surgery, as it may have potential side effects and interact with other medications.
