Brain tumor

Brain tumors are abnormal growths of cells within the brain, which can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). They can arise from different types of brain cells, such as glial cells (astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, ependymomas) or neuronal cells (glioblastomas, medulloblastomas). Symptoms may vary depending on the tumor’s location and size, and can include headaches, seizures, cognitive impairment, vision problems, and motor deficits.
Treatment for brain tumors typically involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The choice of treatment depends on the tumor’s type, grade, and location. Surgery aims to remove as much of the tumor as possible while preserving brain function. Radiation therapy is used to target and destroy remaining cancerous cells, and chemotherapy is administered to target fast-growing cancer cells throughout the body.
Common medications used in the treatment of brain tumors include temozolomide (Temodar), lomustine (CeeNU), carmustine (BiCNU), and bevacizumab (Avastin). These medications are administered under the supervision of a healthcare professional and may have side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and increased risk of infections.
Consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for each individual case, as brain tumor management can be complex and requires specialized expertise.
