Bempedoic acid and Ezetimibe is a dual-action combination medication used to reduce elevated cholesterol levels in the blood. Bempedoic acid is a first-in-class, non-statin lipid-lowering drug that inhibits ATP citrate lyase, an enzyme that plays a crucial role in cholesterol synthesis. Ezetimibe, on the other hand, is a cholesterol absorption inhibitor that lowers LDL cholesterol by blocking the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
When used together, Bempedoic acid and Ezetimibe provide additional cholesterol-lowering effects over monotherapy, making it suitable for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), a genetic disorder characterized by high LDL cholesterol levels, or for those who cannot tolerate or reach their cholesterol goals with statins alone.
