Nifedipine

Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker, a type of medication used to treat various cardiovascular conditions. It works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, which helps to reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow. Nifedipine is available in different forms, including immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets, and capsules.
The most common use of nifedipine is for the management of hypertension (high blood pressure). By reducing blood pressure, nifedipine helps to decrease the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular complications. It is typically prescribed for patients who have not achieved adequate blood pressure control with lifestyle modifications and other medications.
In addition to its use in hypertension, nifedipine is also used for the prevention of angina (chest pain) due to coronary artery disease. Angina occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood, usually as a result of narrowed coronary arteries. By dilating the coronary arteries, nifedipine improves blood flow to the heart muscle and reduces the frequency and severity of angina attacks.
Nifedipine should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional, and any changes in dosage or frequency should be discussed with the prescribing physician. Common side effects of nifedipine include headache, dizziness, flushing, and swelling of the ankles. More serious side effects, such as rapid heart rate, fainting, or worsening angina, require immediate medical attention.
