Norfloxacin
Norfloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class of medications. It is commonly used to treat various bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections.
Norfloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis, which ultimately prevents the growth and reproduction of bacteria. Its broad-spectrum activity makes it effective against a wide range of bacteria, including Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms.
The medication is available in tablet and suspension forms, allowing for flexible dosing and administration options. Norfloxacin is typically prescribed for 7 to 14 days, depending on the severity of the infection and the specific bacterial pathogen involved.
Complete the entire course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication, to ensure the eradication of the bacteria and prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
Common side effects of Norfloxacin may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. Serious side effects, although rare, may include tendonitis, tendon rupture, and changes in heart rhythm.
Before taking Norfloxacin, inform your healthcare provider if you have any history of tendon problems, myasthenia gravis, heart problems, or if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
