Cyclopentolate
Cyclopentolate is a prescription eye medication belonging to a class of drugs called anticholinergic or parasympatholytic agents. It works by blocking the action of a natural substance in the body called acetylcholine, which helps to control muscle movement. Specifically, Cyclopentolate prevents the constriction of the pupil, allowing it to remain dilated or widened.
Cyclopentolate is commonly prescribed as an eye drop solution for diagnostic purposes, most notably in ophthalmic examinations requiring a dilated view of the eye. It is often administered prior to procedures such as tonometry (measuring eye pressure), retinal examination, and funduscopy (examining the back of the eye). Cyclopentolate can also be used to treat certain eye conditions that cause increased pressure within the eyeball, such as glaucoma.
The medication is usually instilled in the affected eye(s) as directed by a healthcare professional. Cyclopentolate may cause temporary side effects such as blurred vision, eye discomfort, and increased sensitivity to light. These effects are typically short-lived and resolve once the medication has been cleared from the eye.
Follow the prescribed dosage and usage instructions provided by a healthcare professional to ensure the safe and effective use of Cyclopentolate. If any adverse reactions or concerns arise during or after the use of this medication, prompt consultation with a healthcare professional is recommended.
