Heartburn

Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, is a burning sensation in the chest area, usually behind the breastbone. It occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Heartburn can be caused by various factors such as overeating, lying down soon after eating, consuming spicy or fatty foods, and certain medications. This uncomfortable condition can be managed through lifestyle adjustments and over-the-counter medications.
Typical Medications: Antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed to alleviate heartburn symptoms. Antacids like Maalox and Mylanta neutralize stomach acid, while H2 blockers like Tagamet and Pepcid reduce acid production. Proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec and Nexium block the production of stomach acid and help heal the esophagus lining.
Please consult with a healthcare professional before starting any medication.
