Mannitol
Mannitol is a synthetic sugar (sorbitol) that is used primarily as an osmotic diuretic to increase urinary output and lower intracranial pressure. This medication works by drawing water into the urine and increasing the amount of fluid the kidneys filter. This helps decrease the amount of salt and water in the bloodstream, which in turn reduces blood volume and blood pressure.
Mannitol is commonly prescribed for patients with symptoms of high intracranial pressure, such as headaches, nausea, or vision changes. It may also be used prior to certain surgical procedures to prevent complications resulting from high pressure within the skull. Furthermore, it is occasionally used to cleanse the urinary tract before surgical procedures on the urinary bladder or ureter.
Mannitol comes in different forms, including oral solution and intravenous injection. The exact dosage and method of administration will vary depending on the specific condition being treated and the clinical judgment of the healthcare provider. It’s important to closely follow the prescribed dosing schedule and notify your doctor if you experience any side effects or new symptoms.
