Dutasteride

Dutasteride, also known as Avodart, is a prescription medication used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, which can cause urinary problems such as frequent urination, urgency, and difficulty in starting or maintaining urine flow.
Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, which means it blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate gland. By inhibiting this conversion, dutasteride reduces the amount of DHT in the prostate, which helps to shrink the size of the enlarged prostate and alleviate the symptoms of BPH.
Dutasteride is available in tablet form and is usually taken once daily. It is not intended for use in women or children and should be used only as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Common side effects of dutasteride may include sexual dysfunction, such as decreased libido or erectile dysfunction, although these typically subside after discontinuation of the medication.
