Perampanel
Perampanel is an antiepileptic medication, primarily used for the treatment of partial-onset seizures in adults and children aged 12 years and older. It belongs to a class of drugs called sodium channel blockers, which work by inhibiting the flow of sodium ions into nerve cells, thus reducing the likelihood of seizure occurrence.
Perampanel is prescribed for individuals who experience seizures that originate in a specific region of the brain, known as the temporal lobe. These seizures may manifest as sudden, involuntary muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, or a combination of both.
The medication is available in the form of oral tablets, which should be taken as directed by a healthcare professional. Dosage may vary depending on factors such as age, weight, and severity of the condition. Perampanel is typically initiated at a low dose, and gradually increased over time to achieve optimal efficacy with minimal side effects.
Some common side effects of perampanel may include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and problems with balance. Patients should consult their healthcare provider if these symptoms persist or worsen. The medication may cause an increase in suicidal thoughts or behaviors, especially during the initial stages of treatment. Individuals should report any mood changes to their healthcare provider immediately.
