Vigabatrin
Vigabatrin is an antiepileptic medication primarily used for the treatment of epilepsy, specifically a type of epilepsy known as infantile spasms. This disorder is characterized by frequent muscle spasms in infants, leading to developmental delays and other neurological issues if left untreated.
Vigabatrin works by increasing the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, a neurotransmitter that helps to inhibit or calm the activity of brain cells. By enhancing the effect of GABA, Vigabatrin helps to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in patients with infantile spasms.
Aside from its primary use in infantile spasms, Vigabatrin may also be considered for patients with other types of epilepsy that are resistant to other treatments. However, its use should be carefully evaluated due to concerns regarding potential side effects on vision.
Vigabatrin should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional, and follow the recommended dosage to ensure the best possible outcome. As with all medications, it is important to monitor for any adverse effects and to report them to a healthcare provider promptly.
