Neuropathic pain

Neuropathic pain, also known as nerve pain, is a distinct type of chronic pain that arises as a direct consequence of damage or disease affecting the somatosensory system, which includes the nerves, spinal cord, and brain. It is characterized by unusual sensations such as burning, stabbing, shooting, or electric-like pain that often persists beyond the expected healing time of an injury or illness.
Typical medications used to treat neuropathic pain include anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and topical agents. Anticonvulsants, such as gabapentin and pregabalin, work by stabilizing nerve cell membranes, thereby reducing the abnormal electrical activity in the nerves. Antidepressants, like amitriptyline and duloxetine, influence the levels of certain neurotransmitters, which can help alleviate pain signals in the nervous system. Topical agents, such as lidocaine and capsaicin, are applied directly to the skin over the affected area to provide localized pain relief.
Please consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment to ensure the appropriate selection and dosage of medications for your specific condition.
