Clomiphene

Clomiphene is an oral medication used to stimulate ovulation in women who have difficulty conceiving. It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that works by blocking the effects of estrogen on the hypothalamus, which in turn triggers the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormones are essential for the development and maturation of ovarian follicles, which contain the eggs.
Clomiphene is typically prescribed to women who have irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles, which can be a sign of hormonal imbalances or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). By inducing ovulation, clomiphene can improve the chances of natural conception. It may also be used in combination with intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments to further enhance fertility.
Clomiphene is usually taken for five days, starting on the third day of the menstrual cycle. The dosage is typically adjusted based on the individual’s response and medical history. Side effects of clomiphene are generally mild and may include hot flashes, abdominal discomfort, headache, and mood swings. In some cases, it may cause ovarian enlargement or multiple births, so monitor the response to treatment and adjust the medication accordingly.
Clomiphene is not suitable for all women with fertility issues, and its effectiveness varies from person to person. Healthcare professionals will typically recommend clomiphene after a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical history, fertility, and overall health.
